The State of Traffic Law Observance and Enforcement in Philadelphia

Three stop signs and a blinking red light don’t prevent 99% of cars from failing to stop at this downtown, park-side intersection near Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square.

There are several people on bikes who are seen performing the same behavior, but as the videographer notes “They ignore three stop signs and a blinking red light–just like bikes do….only inside three ton vehicles, and with a worse view of the street.”

This 5 minute video sums up the state of traffic law in this city of 1.5 million. Philadelphia is considering increasing penalties for bicycle riding violations. Absent from proposed legislation is the call for increased accountability of motorists. The solution may be as simple as enforcing existing road law for all types of transportation.
